The Indian market has been booming since the emergence of Globalization. As the Government has stretched out its hands for helping the start-ups, the youngsters are becoming more inclined towards developing their own start-up. Youngsters today are more interested in starting their own business rather than working for MNCs.
Apparently, start-ups and the journey of the entrepreneurs are considered to be exciting. However, the real journey is tougher than taking up a private job or joining public service.
As the journey is tough and the possibility of attaining success are lesser compared to other occupations, every youngster should be careful right from the beginning itself.
Every youngster should draw a clear roadmap of future and should be ready for any kind of situation which they are likely to face sooner or later. To be secured and to ensure success, every entrepreneur should possess a few but very important skills. There are several skills which are considered as important and utilitarian. However, there are 5 top priorities which every entrepreneur should know.
Every entrepreneur should know at least one web development tool and one Programming language
Every entrepreneur needs a website for making the venture's promotion successful. In today's world, a website is considered as the face of the company.  If the websites are not user-friendly, the visitors will have a bad experience visiting them, which will result in making the venture's promotion a disastrous. For example, to build an app or an eco-system it can be said that the entrepreneurs have to run after developers if they do not have the basic knowledge of developing them. The software developers may bargain and try to play the mind game with the entrepreneurs once they come to learn about their lack of basic knowledge on web development or programming. Besides, the entrepreneurs should know at least one programming language, which will help them in negotiating and dealing with the software developers.
While dealing with the web developers, I have realized that they always try to play the upper hand while negotiating with entrepreneurs. They have the tendency of grabbing the lion's share of profit to be generated by the ventures on the plea that the entire project would only grow based on their coding skills.
My first developer asked for 25% of the company's share but did nothing significant in 2 years in contributing to the development of the company. Due to his irresponsible nature of engagement, the launch of my product got delayed for about 3 years. As a result, I have lost the money which I had invested in advance to develop the system.
And most of the experienced developers may always deny signing any agreement while developing and building websites or software for the entrepreneurs. They may be working for other companies and therefore they officially cannot work for others except their employers.
An entrepreneur should choose his partners carefully. They should be trustworthy, and equally responsible. The relationship between entrepreneurs and his other partners should be based upon the mutual understanding. They should have a vast knowledge of those fields in which they will work for the venture and should add value to it.
The journey of the entrepreneurs cannot be considered as smooth. It is always tough. It can be a lonely journey. For a successful one, every entrepreneur needs a good team. A team which holds the aspiration to achieve the desired results. They should also be able to minimize the gap between the desired results and the actual results. However, over ambition may bring conflicts amongst the team members which may destroy and ruin the entire dynamics of the team and can play to be the biggest obstacle in achieving success.
My second developer was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic coder. However, his greed for monetary benefits halted the entire project. He started alluring me to take up outsourcing projects to earn more money rather than being patient on his entrusted tasks. He diverted his attention towards clients' projects and when I got a client for him, he flew away with the client.
My next surprising experience was with a guy who wished to join me as the marketing head and at a certain point of time; he asked for the 50% share of the profit and argued that the entire venture would be successful because of his marketing skills.
"Dealing with such people who made unrealistic demands at the initial stage of any start-up is quite challenging."
Entrepreneurs should never initiate a business which is completely dependent on funder's money
The involvement of fundraisers may compel the entrepreneurs in losing their control over the ventures or project they wish to develop. There are possibilities that fundraisers may impose their plans and ideas over the entrepreneur's, which may drive the venture in a different direction.
In recent times, we have seen several such examples in the market.
Every Entrepreneur should play with their own strength first
Every entrepreneur should know their own skills and expertise.  They can make up their ventures if they have the insights of the business model they are trying to make. It is always recommended to conduct enough market research before starting any ventures. Otherwise, it is quite easy to face setbacks and financial losses.
During the years 2000 to 2010 start-ups in the BPO industries were at their peak. Several entrepreneurs faced monetary losses due to the involvement of either middlemen or agents associated with outsourcing projects. Middlemen used to extort Entrepreneurs' by taking up fronts for projects and other different ways. Apart from all these factors, the start-up ventures started to take up fake projects, which ultimately led to their failure financially. That heavily affected the BPO industries in those days.
"In business, the entrepreneurs should deal with those domains for which they will not have to be dependent on others."
Learn to say "No"
Every entrepreneur should be expert in communication skill.  They should learn to say "No" without offending anyone. That "No" may make a lot of sense in a start-up business.

#5 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Get Their Diet Right

#5 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Get Their Diet Right

Getting 'diet' right is crucial for Entrepreneurs to balance the risk/reward, flowchart growth, crack deals, meet deadlines, plan strategies and look presentable every time

According to the ancient Indian philosophy of Yoga, the 'Annamaya kosha' (our physical body) and our 'Mana' (mind) is a direct reflection of the 'Anna' (food) we eat. Fascinating new researchers agree with this ancient philosophy and is now telling us that what we eat, how we eat and at what time, all affect our body and brain, deciding not only how we look but also how well we can take decisions, execute plans, basically our cognitive performance.

Getting their 'diet' right hence is crucial for Entrepreneurs to balance the risk/reward, flowchart growth, crack deals, meet deadlines, plan strategies and look presentable all at a time.

"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing" So says Walt Disney and so I shall straight away list out a 5-points 'Eat Right Action Plan'-

  1. Wake up to 'real' food – "A good beginning makes a good ending", says an Italian proverb. Starting off your day right is crucial for entrepreneurs as it will keep you high on energy and light on your feet all day. Most of us love to have our cup of tea/ coffee the first thing in the morning, almost like an everyday romance: fingers hugging the hot cup of fresh brew close to the lips, taking in each sip with all the aroma and warmth it offers. But sorry to burst your bubble, tea/ coffee is not the best drink as you wake up.

Tea/ coffee, of any variety it may be, has caffeine in it. Studies suggest that caffeine triggers release of cortisol (also called 'stress' hormone). A big bump in cortisol puts your body in a 'stress' mode and slows down metabolism, breaks down muscle, hampers fat burning, increases blood pressure etc. This 'stress rush' is part of the reason why we feel 'awake' or 'alert' after our morning cuppa.

While we sleep, all our body processes slow down. As we wake up, the body systems also need time to wake up and start functioning in its full capacity. In such situation, it is better to eat 'real' food that is easy on it v/s something that will further load or stress it out.

Action Plan (1) – Start your day with a fruit/ dry fruits/ handful of nuts or hot homemade breakfast within half an hour of waking up. Post this meal, you can enjoy your morning cup of tea/ coffee.

  1. Planning meals ahead– "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail" said Benjamin Franklin. Everyone in business knows that planning helps prevent crisis so that you spend less time firefighting and stay ahead of the game.

Similarly, if you do not want to be caught up in food crisis/ accidents (like gorging on a pastry at 6pm when you had just decided to eat healthier in the morning), you need to be planning ahead for your meals.

Eating small, frequent meals every 2-3 hours gives a slow, sustained release of blood sugar which in turn keeps your mind alert and body energetic through the day without feeling the need for stimulants like tea/ coffee/ cigarettes.

Action Plan (2) – Plan for your lunch and evening snack (between 4-6pm) in advance. For mid meals, nuts, dry fruits, chana, fruits, yogurt, cheese slice, coconut water, nimbu sherbets are great options.

  1. Local food, global spirit – Indian entrepreneurs, today are going global like never before. For an undying global spirit, what we must stay true to is eating local.

Eating local and seasonal foods is good for your health, supports the local economy and benefits the environment at large. Whereas eating foods from far off places, industrialized and packaged adds inches to your waistline, hampers work productivity and will negatively affect your bottom line.

Action Plan (3) – Replace the cookies/ biscuits in meetings with peanuts/ cashews, aerated drinks/ colas with buttermilk/local sherbets, cakes/ pastries with chikki/ laddoo/ dates etc.

  1. Add ghee to your meals – Ever wondered what the traditional business communities (Marwaris/ Gujaratis/ Parsis/ Sindhis) of India eat in common? It's the Ghee. Ghee being rich in omega 3 boosts brain power and improves memory and cognitive function. Its unique SCFA accelerates fat burning giving you a younger body and sharper mind.

Action Plan (4) – Make sure you have at least 1 tsp of ghee each with breakfast/ lunch/ dinner.

  1. Keep a 2 hours gap between dinner & bedtime – Eating a wholesome dinner that is not close to bedtime will allow enough time for digestion to occur, induce sound sleep and reduce the chance of waking up tired, bloated or acidic the next morning. In short, you would be all set to take the busy day head on!

The founder of modern management, Peter Drucker, says- "Entrepreneurship is neither a science nor an art. It is a practice." So much like 'Eating Right', a practice that only leads to good health and happiness!

The 3 Biggest Leadership Mistakes People Make

The 3 Biggest Leadership Mistakes People Make

On this episode, Entrepreneur Network partner Brian Tracy breaks down the top three mistakes leaders make on a daily basis. The first mistake, Tracy says, is to criticize others -- not to overly criticize them, but to criticize them at all. Instead, he urges leaders to focus on a solution, not on who caused the problem or who is to blame. That way, you can fix the problem while maintaining your employees' self-image and confidence so they can perform at their very best.

How to Be Your Most Productive at Any Given Moment

How to Be Your Most Productive at Any Given Moment

ErosInfotech - Experts in Web, Mobile Apps and Digital Marketing

If you're sitting at home, scrolling through your smartphone for interesting articles to read, chances are you have at least three other more productive things you could and should be doing in order to say that you had a productive day.

So, how do we deal with this? How do we go through each day and accomplish as much as possible without burning ourselves out? Here are a few tips that can help boost productivity and increase daily output:

Set a Morning Routine
True productivity is contingent upon routine. Set yourself up for success with a morning schedule that allows you to wake up, focus, and prepare yourself for all you need to accomplish that day. Stick with it for a few weeks and see how it affects your confidence and productivity at work. Your morning routine doesn't necessarily need to consist of waking up at 4:30 a.m. to work out for two hours, but it should include things that allow your mind and body to focus on what's ahead of you.

Things like yoga can notably improve daily cognition and personal strength, along with a light breakfast and some time to relax before jumping into your day of work.Think about what will allow you to confidently walk out the door each morning, and your work days will become that much more productive

Remove Distractions
It's amazing how much removing distractions will aid in increasing your productivity and focus. I'm not referring to obvious distractions like busy meeting days, your phone constantly ringing with clients on the other end, or co-workers coming in and out of your office to ask questions all day. Sometimes these types of distractions are simply out of your control.

Instead, avoid smaller distractions that are completely within your power to change, like making sure your desk is organized before you start work in the morning, or that the temperature of your work environment is comfortable. If there's anything that might unnecessarily pull your focus away from your job that you can easily change, change it! You'll find that removing these minor disturbances isn't just easy; it makes a huge difference in your ability to buckle down and focus on the task at hand
How to Be Your Most Productive at Any Given Moment

Make Lists
Your brain is like a sponge: it's constantly soaking up new information. And that sponge fills up quickly. That's why it's important to clear your mind in order to make room for more information.

Take the first few minutes of every day to pour out everything that's taking up space in your brain. Simply write down your thoughts, ideas, and to-dos to create space in your mind for other thoughts as well as visualize what needs to get done. This will free you up to actually focus on the items on your list with more clarity and distinct thoughts, which in turn will help you become more productive.

Adhere to the 5-Minute Rule
The "5-Minute Rule" is a simple trick to improve productivity. Quickly scan the list you just made of your goals and to-dos for the day and put a star next to the things that will take fewer than five minutes to complete. Then, do them immediately.

This way, in the first 30 minutes of your day, you'll have multiple items already completed and crossed off your list! There's so much to be said about not only writing things down and visualizing what needs to be done, but actually crossing things off. Being able to quickly cross items off my list is one of the most motivating things you can do to increase your productivity.

#8 Reasons Why Mobile Advertising is Essential for Start-ups

Mobile marketing is growing very hastily with more and more people switching to smartphones from generic mobile phones. Due to the increase in the number of smartphone users, a tough rivalry has emerged in the field of mobile advertising. Now every mobile marketer wants to allure their target audience with various strategies, which have boosted the competition among the publishers, advertisers, and marketers.

ErosInfotech.com Experts in Websites, Mobile Apps , Cloud based softwares & Digital Marketing

The potential growth rate of mobile advertising can also be judged by the hike in mobile ad spend rate which has witnessed an increase of 430% since 2013. Digital advertising is no longer limited to websites. In fact, mobile marketing is the new shining star of the advertising world.

In countries like India, which are going under a start-up revolution, mobile advertising is said to be a key player in their growth. Here are few pointers describing "Why mobile advertising is essential for start-ups."

1. Mobile Advertising is the Primary Mode of Digital Advertising- Around 80% of Indians and 2 billion of world population prefer mobile phones for internet usage. Especially in India due to the recent telecom revolution, there has been a sudden hike in the mobile internet users. This simply means to reach the maximum number of audience, start-ups should target Mobile advertising as their primary mode of advertising.

2. Cost Effective and Gives Conversion-oriented Solution- In a start-up environment funds are always a sensitive subject and other methods of advertising cost a fortune. Mobile advertising is a lot cheaper and gives an effective solution to all the advertising related problems. It's not only affordable but also gives a quick conversion to the marketers.
3. Better Understanding of Customers- Nowadays every brand wants to personally connect with its consumer to deliver their desired products. Mobile advertising is a direct medium where the advertiser can directly connect with its audience to sell its product. This also builds up better understanding between the brand and the consumer where the brand can understand the need of its consumer in order to cater them with better options.

4. SMS marketing- SMS marketing is a very powerful method of digital communication. It's an effective way to get your messages read by your targeted audience. SMS has more chance of getting noticed than any other form of mobile advertising. SMS marketing helps start-ups to keep their consumers updated about their brand's promotional activities such as discounts and services.

5. Develop your Mobile Application - Mobile applications are a key pillar of the growth of any start-up. It's the most efficacious method of consumer engagement. Mobile Application plays an important role for a start-up in the digital eco-system. And if you are also looking to endorse through mobile ads then also the application serves as the best platform for ad postings. If your company's application is installed in the consumer's mobile phone it will eventually build up a relation between the brand and the user and which is the reason why many start-ups prefer mobile application as it gives them a direct and instant monetary conversion. It also builds up a relation between the user and the brand.

6. Get Noticed: For start-ups working in digital space and mobile space again, it's very important for them to build a brand presence where the brand can talk about its products and its USP. Most start-ups promote their brand through ad pop-ups on various mobile applications.

ErosInfotech.com Experts in Websites, Mobile Apps , Cloud based softwares & Digital Marketing

7. User Review and Rating on App Store The downloading of your application depends on consumer rating and reviews on app stores such as Google play store. The user first compares the rating of your app with your competitors, before downloading the application. Building a good review of your brand's application is a vital part of branding in mobile advertising. A good app review increases your chance of being downloaded by 90%. If you are a start-up, working on a very initial level, then also you can give direct competition to established companies by good consumer ratings.

8.Post-mobile Videos: Create a short and entertaining promotional video about your brands so that they are more engaging. Always make sure the video is not too long, otherwise it will lose its charm. Long videos not only consume the data as well as also form apathy about your brand.

Always remember that mobile advertising is a very influential way of marketing in the digital era but this medium only gives the good outcome when you understand your audience otherwise all your strategies will fall fatal.

11 Habits of Mentally Strong People

11 Habits of Mentally Strong People

We all reach critical points in our lives where our mental strength is tested. It might be a difficult friend or colleague, a dead-end job or a struggling relationship.

Whatever the challenge, you have to be strong, see things through a new lens and take decisive action if you want to move through it successfully.

Related: 12 Daily Habits of Exceptional Leaders

It sounds easy. We all want good friends, good jobs and good relationships.

But it isn't.

It's hard to be mentally strong, especially when you feel stuck. The ability to break the mold and take a bold new direction requires that extra grit, daring and spunk that only the mentally strongest people have.

It's fascinating how mentally strong people set themselves apart from the crowd. Where others see impenetrable barriers, they see challenges to overcome.

When Thomas Edison's factory burned to the ground in 1914, destroying one-of-a-kind prototypes and causing $23 million in damage, Edison's response was simple: "Thank goodness all our mistakes were burned up. Now we can start fresh again."

Edison's reaction is the epitome of mental strength -- seeing opportunity and taking action when things look bleak.

There are habits you can develop to improve your mental strength. In fact, the hallmarks of mentally strong people are actually strategies that you can begin using today.

1. They're emotionally intelligent.
Emotional intelligence is the cornerstone of mental strength. You cannot be mentally strong without the ability to fully understand and tolerate strong negative emotions and do something productive with them. Moments that test your mental strength are ultimately testing your emotional intelligence (EQ).

Unlike your IQ, which is fixed, your EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with understanding and effort. It's no wonder that 90 percent of top performers have high EQs and people with high EQs earn $28,000 more annually (on average) than their low-EQ counterparts. Unfortunately EQ skills are in short supply. TalentSmart has tested more than a million people, and we've found that just 36 percent of these are able to accurately identify their emotions as they happen.

2. They're confident.
Mentally strong people subscribe to Ford's notion that your mentality has a powerful effect on your ability to succeed. This notion isn't just a motivational tool -- it's a fact. A recent study at the University of Melbourne showed that confident people went on to earn higher wages and get promoted more quickly than others did.

"Whether you think you can, or think you can't -- you're right." -- Henry Ford

True confidence -- as opposed to the false confidence people project to mask their insecurities -- has a look all its own. Mentally strong people have an upper hand over the doubtful and the skittish because their confidence inspires others and helps them to make things happen.

3. They say no.
Research conducted at UC Berkeley showed that the more difficulty you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout and even depression. Mentally strong people know that saying no is healthy, and they have the self-esteem and foresight to make their nos clear.

When it's time to say no, mentally strong people avoid phrases such as "I don't think I can" or "I'm not certain." They say no with confidence because they know that saying no to a new commitment honors their existing commitments and gives them the opportunity to successfully fulfill them.

The mentally strong also know how to exert self-control by saying no to themselves. They delay gratification and avoid impulsive action that causes harm.

4. They neutralize difficult people.
Dealing with difficult people is frustrating and exhausting for most. Mentally strong people control their interactions with toxic people by keeping their feelings in check. When they need to confront a toxic person, they approach the situation rationally. They identify their emotions and don't allow anger or frustration to fuel the chaos. They also consider the difficult person's standpoint and are able to find common ground and solutions to problems. Even when things completely derail, mentally strong people are able to take the toxic person with a grain of salt to avoid letting him or her bring them down.

5. They embrace change.
Mentally strong people are flexible and are constantly adapting. They know that fear of change is paralyzing and a major threat to their success and happiness. They look for change that is lurking just around the corner, and they form a plan of action should these changes occur.

Related: 10 Fundamental Truths That Will Change Your Life

Only when you embrace change can you find the good in it. You need to have an open mind and open arms if you're going to recognize, and capitalize on, the opportunities that change creates.

6. They embrace failure.
Mentally strong people embrace failure because they know that the road to success is paved with it. No one ever experienced true success without first embracing failure. By revealing when you're on the wrong path, your mistakes pave the way for you to succeed. The biggest breakthroughs typically come when you're feeling the most frustrated and the most stuck. It's this frustration that forces you to think differently, to look outside the box and to see the solution that you've been missing.

7. Yet, they don't dwell on mistakes.
Mentally strong people know that where you focus your attention determines your emotional state. When you fixate on the problems that you're facing, you create and prolong negative emotions and stress, which hinders performance. When you focus on actions to better yourself and your circumstances, you create a sense of personal efficacy, which produces positive emotions and improves performance. Mentally strong people distance themselves from their mistakes, but they do so without forgetting them. By keeping their mistakes at a safe distance, yet still handy enough to refer to, they are able to adapt and adjust for future success.

8. They don't compare themselves to others.
Mentally strong people don't pass judgment on other people because they know that everyone has something to offer, and they don't need to take other people down a notch in order to feel good about themselves. Comparing yourself to other people is limiting. Jealousy and resentment suck the life right out of you; they're massive energy-stealers. Mentally strong people don't waste time or energy sizing people up and worrying about whether or not they measure up. Instead of wasting your energy on jealousy, funnel that energy into appreciation. When you celebrate the success of other people, you both benefit.

9. They exercise.
A study conducted at the Eastern Ontario Research Institute found that people who exercised twice a week for 10 weeks felt more socially, intellectually and athletically competent. They also rated their body image and self-esteem higher. Best of all, rather than the physical changes in their bodies being responsible for the uptick in confidence, which is key to mental strength, it was the immediate, endorphin-fueled positivity from exercise that made all the difference.

10. They get enough sleep.
It's difficult to overstate the importance of sleep to increasing your mental strength. When you sleep, your brain removes toxic proteins, which are by-products of neural activity when you're awake. Unfortunately, your brain can remove them adequately only while you're asleep, so when you don't get enough sleep, the toxic proteins remain in your brain cells, wreaking havoc by impairing your ability to think -- something no amount of caffeine can fix.

Mentally tough people know that their self-control, focus and memory are all reduced when they don't get enough -- or the right kind -- of sleep, so they make quality sleep a top priority.

Related: How Smart People Handle Difficult People

11. They're relentlessly positive.
Keep your eyes on the news for any length of time, and you'll see that it's just one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies and environmental disasters. It's easy to think the world is headed downhill fast. And who knows? Maybe it is. But mentally strong people don't worry about that because they don't get caught up in things they can't control. Instead of trying to start a revolution overnight, they focus their energy on directing the two things that are completely within their power -- their attention and their effort.

Bringing It All Together
Mental strength is not an innate quality bestowed upon a select few. It can be achieved and enjoyed.

10 Tweaks To Your Morning Routine That Will Transform Your Entire Day

10 Tweaks To Your Morning Routine That Will Transform Your Entire Day

Researchers at the University of Nottingham recently published findings from their exploration of 83 separate studies on energy and self-control. What they found will change the way you start your day.

The researchers found that self-control and energy are not only intricately linked but also finite, daily resources that tire much like a muscle. Even though we don't always realize it, as the day goes on, we have increased difficulty exerting self-control and focusing on our work. As self-control wears out, we feel tired and find tasks to be more difficult and our mood sours.

This exhaustion of self-control kills your productivity, and it makes the morning hours, when self-control is highest, the most important hours of the day.

But the trick isn't just to spend your morning hours working; it's to do the right things in the morning that will make your energy and self-control last as long as possible.

"For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something." -- Steve Jobs

The Nottingham research has led me to uncover ways we can break bad habits in the morning and maximize our energy and self-control throughout the day.

Whether you naturally wake up feeling alert and productive or wake up with the brainpower of a zombie, these tips will help you transform your morning routine and set a positive tone that lasts the entire day.

1. Start with exercise.
Researchers at the University of Bristol found that people who exercise during the workday have more energy and a more positive outlook, which are both critical to getting things done. Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. Exercising first thing in the morning ensures that you'll have the time for it, and it improves your self-control and energy levels all day long.

2. But drink some lemon water first.
Drinking lemon water as soon as you wake up spikes your energy levels physically and mentally. Lemon water gives you steady, natural energy that lasts the length of the day by improving nutrient absorption in your stomach. You need to drink it first thing in the morning (on an empty stomach) to ensure full absorption. You should also wait 15–30 minutes after drinking it before eating (perfect time to squeeze in some exercise). Lemons are packed with nutrients; they're chock full of potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants. If you're under 150 pounds, drink the juice of half a lemon (a full lemon if you're over 150 pounds). Don't drink the juice without water because it's hard on your teeth.

3. No screen time until breakfast.
When you dive straight into e-mails, texts and Facebook, you lose focus and your morning succumbs to the wants and needs of other people. It's much healthier to take those precious first moments of the day to do something relaxing that sets a calm, positive tone for your day. Jumping right into electronics has the opposite effect -- it's a frantic way to start your day. Exercising, meditating or even watching the birds out the window are all great ways to start the day.

Related: 12 Daily Habits of Exceptional Leaders

4. Eat a real breakfast.
Eating anything at all for breakfast puts you ahead of a lot of people. People who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese, they have more stable blood-sugar levels and they tend to be less hungry over the course of the day. And these are just the statistics for people who eat any breakfast. When you eat a healthy breakfast, the doors to a productive day swing wide open. A healthy breakfast gives you energy, improves your short-term memory and helps you to concentrate more intensely and for longer periods.

5. Set goals for the day.
Research shows that having concrete goals is correlated with huge increases in confidence and feelings of control. Setting goals specific to the day puts everything into motion. Narrow your goals down to a few achievable ones that can easily be broken down into steps. Vague goals such as "I want to finish writing my article" are counter-productive because they fail to include the "how" of things. The same goal re-phrased in a more functional way would read something like this: "I am going to finish my article by writing each of the three sections, spending no more than an hour on each section." Now, you have more than simply something you want to achieve -- you have a way to achieve it.

Getting your morning started off right at home is important, but it's only half the battle. If you fail to maintain that tone once you set foot in the office, your morning can lose momentum quickly. Here's how you can maintain a productive tone once you hit the office:

6. First, clean your workspace.
Even though it's a pain to clean right when you get into work, it makes a big difference to your ability to concentrate. A Princeton University study found that people who worked in a clean workspace out-performed those who worked in a cluttered one because clutter pulls your attention away from your work. In fact, the effects of clutter on concentration are not all that different from the effects of multi-tasking.

7. No e-mail until you've eaten three frogs.
"Eating a frog" is the greatest antidote to procrastination, and the most productive people know the importance of biting into this delicacy first thing in the morning. In other words, spend your morning on something that requires a high level of concentration that you don't want to do, and you'll get it done in short order. Make a habit of eating three frogs before you check your e-mail because e-mail is a major distraction that enables procrastination and wastes precious mental energy.

"Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day." -- Mark Twain

8. Keep morning meetings on schedule.
Meetings are the biggest time waster there is, and they can ruin an otherwise productive morning. People who use their mornings effectively know that a meeting will drag on forever if they let it, so they inform everyone at the onset that they'll stick to the intended schedule. This sets a limit that motivates everyone to be more focused and efficient. Keep your morning meetings on time, and your entire day will stay on track.

9. Don't multitask.
Multi-tasking in the morning -- when you have lots to do, tons of energy and it feels like you can do two or three things at once -- is tempting, but it sets your whole day back. Research conducted at Stanford University confirmed that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. The researchers found that people who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time.

But what if some people have a special gift for multitasking? The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multitaskers (those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance) were actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time. The frequent multitaskers performed worse because they had more trouble organizing their thoughts and filtering out irrelevant information, and they were slower at switching from one task to another. Ouch!

Multitasking reduces your efficiency and performance because your brain can only focus adequately on one thing at a time. When you try to do two things at once, your brain lacks the capacity to perform both tasks successfully.

10. Finally, say no.
No is a powerful word that will protect your precious mornings. When it's time to say no, avoid phrases such as "I don't think I can" or "I'm not certain." Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them while your mind is fresh. Research conducted at the University of California Berkeley showed that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression. Learn to use no, and it will lift your mood as well as your productivity.

Bringing It All Together
The right morning routine can make your day, every day. The trick is to be intentional about your mornings, understanding that a.m. hours are precious and should be handled with care.
